It's September Baby!

And that means for recruiting, it’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Everybody is back from summer vacation and EVERYBODY is on the market!

It’s back-to-school time and it’s back to serious work time:

  • Connection: with family & friends that people have during the summer months leads to a general introspection on life, sense of happiness, and professional / career outlook. (for most people this ember will burn brighter through the holidays until they finally commit to a New Year’s resolution).
  • Self-actualization: the connection with family & friends causes people to think about what they want most from work. Knowledge workers want a nourishing environment for learning & growth. The foundational / formative years around family & friends were fundamental to this kind of self development, and now, unless they are getting this from work, it’s just a matter of time before they yearn for a better place to maximize their potential.
  • September is the last month of the quarter – still time to make a strong 3rd quarter and line up October for a great 4th quarter (and the weather is generally fantastic for interviews to affect people’s disposition in the positive!).
  • November & December: people are consumed with holiday hustle & bustle. Executive leaders who make their hires now can make a stronger impact in the final quarter.
And, while technically January is the biggest job search month of the year (New Year’s resolutions and company hiring budgets are fresh and new), now that the summer doldrums are over, September is the best time to get a jump start on all the job seekers and recruiters in January!

So, if you're even remotely thinking about making a hire or making a move, remember the words of Maurice White from Earth, Wind and Fire:

“Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing.
As we danced in the night,
Remember how the stars stole the night away

… do you remember
dancing in September
never was a cloudy day…”
